FAQ

What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique identifier assigned to devices on a network. It allows devices to communicate over the internet or local networks, similar to how a postal address delivers mail to a specific location. IP addresses can be public (visible online) or private (used within a local network).

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 is the older version using 32-bit addresses (~4 billion unique addresses). IPv6 is newer, using 128-bit addresses, providing vastly more possible IPs.

What is geolocation?

Geolocation determines the approximate physical location of a device based on its IP address. It can provide information such as city, region, country, and sometimes latitude/longitude.

Does my IP reveal my exact location?

Your IP can reveal your general location (city or region) but usually not your exact home address. Using a VPN or proxy can further hide your real location.

Is my IP address safe and private?

By itself, an IP address isn't dangerous, but it can be used to approximate your location or track activity. ISPs can log your IP, and sharing it publicly may expose privacy risks. VPNs or proxies help protect your privacy.

Can I change my IP address?

You can change your IP by resetting your connection, using a VPN, or contacting your ISP. Consumer IPs are often dynamic and may change automatically over time.

What is a VPN or proxy?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure, encrypted connection, masking your real IP and location. A proxy forwards your requests through another server to provide anonymity, though it may not encrypt your data.
